The Short Answer
emoji_events Best Overall
April-May and September-October. Comfortable temperatures, snow-free passes, green valleys or golden harvest, and reliable weather. Ideal for almost every trek.
terrain Best for Toubkal
June-September. The high summit is snow-free and non-technical. Warm at altitude, though valleys are hot — early starts help.
Morocco's trekking terrain ranges from 1,500m valleys to the 4,167m Toubkal summit, so "the best time" shifts with altitude. Read on for the full month-by-month breakdown and matching trek recommendations.
Understanding the Atlas Climate
Before picking a month, it helps to understand how the Atlas weather works. Two factors dominate: altitude and season.
- height Altitude: Temperature drops roughly 6°C for every 1,000m you climb. A pleasant valley can become freezing at the summit.
- ac_unit Snow line: From November to April, snow covers the highest peaks and passes above 2,500-3,000m, closing some routes.
- water_drop Rainfall: Mostly November to March, and generally moderate. Summers are dry and sunny.
- wb_sunny Sun: Morocco enjoys abundant sunshine year-round, even in winter.
This is why a low-level Berber village trek can be perfect in January while the Toubkal summit is a serious winter mountaineering challenge at the same time.

Trekking by Season
Spring (March-May)
The most beautiful season. Melting snow feeds rushing rivers, wildflowers carpet the valleys, and the peaks stay dramatically snow-capped. Temperatures are mild — perfect for walking. By May, most high passes have opened and early Toubkal ascents become possible. This is prime time for Berber villages treks when the mountains are at their greenest.
Summer (June-August)
Hot in the valleys but the ideal window for high-altitude adventure. The Toubkal summit and the demanding 7-day High Atlas trek are best tackled now, when the high passes are completely snow-free. Start walking early to beat the midday heat on lower sections, and carry plenty of water.
Autumn (September-November)
Arguably the best all-round season. September and October bring stable weather, comfortable temperatures, and the golden light of harvest season in the villages. Fewer crowds than spring, and the summit is still accessible early in the period. First snows usually arrive in November.
Winter (December-February)
A different kind of magic. Snow transforms the high peaks into an alpine wonderland, while lower valleys stay accessible with mild, sunny days. Village and Anti-Atlas treks are wonderful now. The Toubkal summit becomes a technical winter climb requiring crampons, ice axe, and mountaineering experience.
Matching Your Trek to the Season
The single most useful planning tip: choose your trek and season together. Here's how they pair:
| Trek Type | Ideal Months |
|---|---|
| Berber village treks (2-5 days) | April-June, September-November |
| Mount Toubkal summit | June-September (non-technical) |
| 7-day High Atlas circuit | May-October |
| Day hikes (Ourika, Imlil) | Year-round |
| Winter mountaineering (Toubkal) | December-February (experienced only) |
| Anti-Atlas / desert-edge treks | October-April |

Seasonal Packing & Safety Tips

- wb_sunnySun protection all year. High-altitude UV is intense even when temperatures feel cool.
- warningHeed flash-flood warnings. After heavy rain, valley rivers rise quickly. Always follow your guide's advice.
- eventBook peak seasons early. Spring and autumn are popular — reserve guides and refuges well ahead.
